A family moving to Christchurch from Wellington at the weekend lost their beloved two-year-old tabby cat, Michael Jackson, after he escaped from his cage during a roadside rest near Blenheim.

Petrina Petterson and her two boys Karewa, 6, and Tangaroa, 12, caught the ferry from Wellington on Saturday. On their way from Picton, they pulled over for a break about 1pm at a rest area beside a factory near Vernon St in Riverlands.

Michael Jackson was also let out of his cage for a break - the last time he was seen. He scratched Karewa on his face when he opened the cage, and was gone before anyone could do anything, Ms Petterson said.

The family had spent three hours looking for him before driving to Christchurch and then returning the next day to search for another fruitless three hours.

Michael Jackson is described as a tabby cat with white paws and white under his chin. He was last seen wearing a blue harness and lead
.
Anyone who comes across him can call the Pettersons on 027 392 8044.
