The worst storm in Wellington region overnight since the 1968 storm that overturned the Cook Strait ferry Wahine with a loss of over 50 lives. Wind gusts up to 200 km last night. All ferries, trains and planes out. Bit like the song trains ,boats and planes. Power cuts, damaged homes and thousands of trees damaged or knocked over by the wind. Better now than in early spring. Snowing in Christchurch, Timaru area and down in Tapanui, Southland this morning. Still 8000 homes without power in Wellington.
