Ngai Tahu - Dirty Dairying is Unacceptable
Dirty dairying such as illegal discharge of dairy effluent into Te Waihora (Lake Ellesmere) is unacceptable, says a South Island iwi, Ngai Tahu.
Corporate farmer White Gold has been fined for discharging about 45,000 litres of diluted effluent from a Springston property onto land and waterways that drain into the lake in October 2010.
Ngai Tahu's general manager of tribal interests, David Perenara-O'Connell, says the actions by the dairy company were inappropriate and unacceptable.
He says the iwi's people use Te Waihora to gather food.
In August last year, Ngai Tahu started working with the Canterbury Regional Council and Government on a long term rejuvenation plan for the lake.
Mr Perenara-O'Connell says this work includes farm and stock management, research and reducing nitrogen and phosphate levels
