:no:Pike River mine families abandon hope of recovering bodies of their family members - this is so very, very sad!
A spokesperson for the families of the miners who died in Pike River mine said the families have abandoned all hope of recovering the bodies.
Bernie Monk confirmed to Radio New Zealand on Wednesday that the decision was made at a meeting on the West Coast on Tuesday night.
Twenty nine men died in an explosion in the mine on 19 December, 2010.
Neither the new owners of the mine, state owned Solid Energy, or the NZ Government are prepared to give the familes any assurance that the bodies will ever be recovered. Solid Energy said maybe access to the mine could be made by a new, at present unplanned, mine in the future. PM John Key promised the families the bodies would be recovered, money was no object, but did not force any conditions in the sale of the Pike River mine to Solid Energy.

Several thousand people have gathered in Christchurch this afternoon to protest the demolition of the city's Anglican cathedral.
The protest rally began in Cranmer Square and saw past and present civic leaders, MPs and other high profile Christchurch residents calling on the Anglican Church to immediately halt demolition work on the quake-damaged Cathedral.
The rally came on the day an opinion poll showed the fate of the Anglican cathedral has divided the region, with 54 per cent of those polled favouring demolition and 42 per cent calling for it to be saved.
Former MP Jim Anderton told the crowd that 100 engineers had confirmed the Cathedral could be saved and restoration should go ahead regardless of the cost. If the city could afford to spend money on a new rugby stadium it could afford to restore the city's most iconic building.
Long-time heritage campaigner and former city councillor Anna Crighton said the Anglican Church should take heed of both the New Zealand Historic Places Trust's and the Christchurch City Council's call for a pause to demolition work.
"Pause, consult the experts and let the public ... have a say about their Cathedral,'' Crighton said.
After an hour of impassioned pleas for the cathedral to be saved the fired-up crowd marched from Cranmer Square to the central city cordon at Worcester Boulevard where the Wizard tolled a bell and called on the "evil'' Anglican bishop to bring an end to demolition work on the Cathedral.

:no:KFC's secret recipe is out of the bucket. It turns out the Colonel has been wrapping his greasy chickens in packaging made from Indonesian rainforests that the endangered Sumatran tigers call home. I've never liked KFC anyway, but this would ensure I didn't buy the stuff in future.
The Asian Pulp and Paper company(APP) the parent company of the New Zealand based Cottonsoft who were exposed last year for trashing rainforests to make toilet paper rolls, is one of the most notorious, or perhaps even nefarious rainforest destroyers. I have posted here at the Green Planet about this despicable company just a few weeks ago. Scroll back and have a read.
You can read more here about evidence that has been released about the illegal usage of endangered rainforest timber, and the discovery that KFC in the UK, China and Indonesia has been using packaging containing rainforest fibre supplied by APP. A number of large international companies such as Mattel, Nestle and Adidas have dropped APP like hot coals - the pressure is now right on the Colonel to stop using APP products and help win a real victory for the Indonesian rainforests.

Join the international revolt - people from Indonesia to China, New Zealand to America and Europe - are joining the revolt to go tell KFC and the Colonel that turning rainforests into trash is absolutely unacceptable.

A message to all Kiwis: Heed the call and save the Maui dolphin...

Save the Maui's Dolphin

The Maui dolphin is facing extinction...
New Zealand is home to the world's smallest and rarest marine dolphin. But Maui's dolphin is in very real danger of extinction with new reports putting its entire population at only 55.
The Government has responded by proposing two interim protection measures until it can complete a full review later this year. But they are not strong or urgent enough and will leave Maui’s dolphins at risk from being caught and killed in fishing nets.

The measures include extending the set net ban along the west coast of the North Island to include the Taranaki coast from Pariokariwa Point south to Hawera and out to 4 nautical miles, and extending the marine mammal sanctuary along the west coast south to Hawera and out to 12 nautical miles.

It's not enough. What's needed is a total ban on gillnets and trawling out to 100m depth throughout Maui's dolphin habitat. As things stand, the Maui's dolphin are likely to become extinct in our lifetime. The time to act is now.

http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/dolphins/1/1

When they have all gone it will be too late New Zealand. So act now and help save the Maui dolphin. Support Greenpeace and other conservationists!

Police believe veteran journalist Derek Round had been in recent contact with the person who killed him in a horrific attack at his Whanganui home.
Mr Round, 77, was found dead in his Whanganui house on Thursday.
He suffered a number of violent blows to the head after being attacked in his living room.
Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Kirby said investigators believed the person who carried out the attack had been in contact with Mr Round in the days leading up to his death - either by phone, text or in person.
"Because of this we want to hear from anyone who had dealings with Derek in the week before he was violently attacked."
Mr Round's distinctive 1996 blue Jaguar XJ6 was spotted on Thursday morning in the suburb of Aramoho.
