Legendary All Black player and coach, Sir Fred Allen, farewelled at Eden Park. Over 250 guests, including a pantheon of All Black legends, today celebrated the life of arguably New Zealand’s greatest rugby coach.
Sir Frederick (Fred) Allen died aged 92 on Saturday in Whangaparoa after battling illness. He was, today, fittingly remembered at an emotional two-hour memorial service in what was his final visit to Eden Park, dubbed his second home.
Sir Wilson Whineray, Sir Colin Meads and Sir Brian Lochore were among the coveted speakers to recount tales of playing under Allen, who presided over 37 wins as All Blacks coach, including an unbeaten 14 tests, as well as 25 Ranfurly Shield defences with Auckland.
“It’s hard to put into words what it means but we are celebrating the life of one of New Zealand’s greatest,” Meads said.
