A plan for a 10,000 - 12,000 seat stadium in Petone, near Wellington, is a step closer.
Hutt City Councillors on Wednesday night were given an initial private briefing on the proposal put forward by the Community Facilities Trust, and it will now be publicly discussed at a council meeting later this month.
Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace says at this stage there's been no detailed discussion on costings - only the design concept - but it could be of great value to Petone and the Wellington region.
Some observers have tipped that if it goes ahead, the stadium could be a new home for the Phoenix football club.
Former Wellington city councillor John Morrison said it would be sad to see the Phoenix leave Westpac Stadium, but small crowds there mean a mid-sized stadium

Corruption claim in NZ supermarkets a sign that National's economic policies are working. It's all part of a brighter future!!!Supermarket chain Countdown has rejected accusations in parliament that it has been demanding money from local suppliers.

Australian-owned New Zealand supermarket chain Countdown has rejected accusations in parliament that it has been demanding money from local suppliers under threat of blacklisting their products.
Labour MP Shane Jones said he had been contacted by a number of firms and had been told about what he described as "the Countdown shakedown".
He said the local company representatives had been told Countdown's profits last year didn't meet shareholder expectations.
"They are demanding of Kiwi businesses payments, back-dated cheques, and recompense for the losses the supermarkets assert they suffered last year.
"And if they don't pay the cheques, they are being told: no shelf space into the future... and if you breathe one word of this, we will blacklist you permanently."
Countdown's managing director Dave Chambers reacted by issuing a statement saying he "categorically rejected" the allegations Mr Jones had made under parliamentary privilege

LIZARD-LIKE?: An Official Information Act request was made to John Key's office asking for evidence disproving the prime minister was reptilian. No eWho's to say Prime Minister John Key isn't a reptilian overlord in disguise?Ads by Google

Key's own office certainly can't; its response to an official information request was that it had no data to disprove the theory.
The response came after Shane Warbrooke requested "any evidence to disprove the theory that Mr John Key is in fact a David Icke-style shape reptilian shifting alien ushering humanity towards enslavement".
Key's chief of staff responded this month, saying "no such information existed" to probable cries of "they would say that" from conspiracy theorists.
David Icke is a former British footballer and broadcaster who descended into ridicule after claiming he was the "Son of the Godhead" and promoting conspiracy theories, which he has since turned into books.
At the heart of his theories lies the idea that a secret group of reptilian humanoids called the Babylonian Brotherhood controls humanity, and that many prominent figures are in fact reptilian.

The New Zealand cricket coach Mike Hesson admits Ross Taylor is irreplaceable, but feels there are some players on the first class scene who deserve a shot at Test cricket.
Taylor, who along with Kane Williamson has been the most consistent batsman this summer, will not arrive in Wellington on Tuesday as he remains at home awaiting the arrival of his second child.
Hesson says he'll be missed if he can't line up in Friday's second Test against India.
Batsman Tom Latham and allrounder Jimmy Neesham are among those being considered as a possible replacement for Taylor.
